History for Hire-The Home School Field Trip

A few weeks back, actually like a month ago, I arranged for a field trip for the home school film makers guild to one of my favorite prop houses, History for Hire, as much a museum as a prop house. Jim and Pam Elyea, Proprietors, gave an wonderfully interesting tour, with hands on learning stuff and just a wealth of history, inspiration and knowledge.

It was more than hands on, it was also "eye's on" with old time 3-D glasses and View-masters.

They went through some of the history of film showing us all sorts of film cameras from the silent era and into the first talkies and on.

We were shown their fabrication and repair department, one of the kid's favorite part of the tour. They quickly realized that part of "movie magic" is things not being what they really are, in a word fake and yet seeming real.

They also learned that you can't use and antique real baseball glove in a period movie about baseball the glove would be new not old looking.

These were the bins with the bits and pieces needed to repair and/or fabricate assorted props. How they are able to keep track of all it, is beyond me.

And then came the tour of the prop house, which took us through every period of history from every end of the earth from the battlefields of the American Civil War to palaces of the Pharaohs.

To the Golden Era of Radio.

All in All a wonderful journey and for me a very successful entry into field trip planning.

A special thanks to Pam for her continued support.

I'm so excited I got to see what happened, I really wanted to go, but didn't want to chase Ean through the hallways! Now I wish I had gone!

thanks for sending!
